چکیده

A multi-QoS scalable-distributed-arbitration (MSDA) ATM switch is described that supports both highand low-priority traffic under the head-of-line-priority discipline. It uses crosspoint and transit buffers, each consisting of a highand low-priority buffer. The buffers arbitrate in a distributed manner the selection of which cellsto transmit. The MSDA switch supports multiple QoS classes while still providing the scalability of a previously described single-QoS scalable-distributedarbitration (SSDA) switch. A problem occurs when the delaytime-based cell-selection mechanism used in the SSDA switch is applied to the low-priority traffic: it cannot achieve fairness in terms of throughput. This problem is overcome by introducing a distributed-ring-arbiter-based cell-selection mechanism at each crosspoint for the low-priority traffic. The low-priority transit buffer at each crosspoint has virtual queues, one for each upper input port. Cells for the low-priority traffic are selected by distributed-ring arbitration among the low-priority crosspoint buffer and these virtual queues. For the high-priority traffic, the same delay-time-based cell-selection mechanism is used as in the SSDA switch. Simulations show that the MSDA switch ensures fairness interms of delay time for the high-priority traffic and ensures fairness in terms of throughput for the low-priority traffic. key words: ATM, switch, arbitration, QoS, fairness

Learning automata-based bus arbitration for shared-medium ATM switches

Although new high-bandwidth network technologies are being introduced and widely deployed, asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) is still considered one of the most important network technologies currently in use. A number of ATM switch architectures have been proposed in the literature. However, industry has shown that is better to use the well-known shared-medium technique in the design of these A...

Hardware Support for Controlled Interaction of Guaranteed and Best-eeort Communication

Real-time communication typically consists of guaranteed packets that must satisfy their delivery deadlines and best-eeort packets that can tolerate occasional deadline misses for improved average latency. This paper presents hardware techniques for supporting the coexistence of these two traac classes in real-time point-to-point networks. A careful selection of routing and switching techniques...

High Speed Networks A FAST ARBITRATION SCHEME FOR TERABIT PACKET SWITCHES

Input-output queued switches have been widely considered as the most feasible solution for large capacity packet switches and IP routers. The challenge is to develop a high speed and cost-effective arbitration scheme to maximize the switch throughput and delay performance for supporting multimedia services with various quality-of-service (QoS) requirements. In this paper, we propose a ping-pong...

A two-dimensional scalable crossbar matrix switch architecture

Rapid growth of Internet traffic causes a new challenge in the design of high-speed switches. One of main design issues for high-speed switches is a scalability problem. This paper proposes a scalable crossbar matrix (SCM) switch architecture, which consists of multiple crossbar switch units(XSU) with virtual output queues(VOQs) at the inputs and single-cell scheduling decomposition buffers(SDB...

Scheduling with dynamic bandwidth allocation for DiffServ classes

The diverse service requirements of emerging Internet applications foster the need for flexible and scalable IP quality-of-service (QoS) schemes. Due to its simplicity and scalability, DiffServ is expected to be widely deployed across the Internet. Though DiffServ supporting scheduling algorithms for output-queueing (OQ) switches have been widely studied, there are few DiffServ scheduling algor...
